Also known as the French southern and Antarctic lands, the territory compromises of a collection of volcanic islands present in the southern part of Africa and south of Indian Ocean. The Antarctic Treaty System enables the French to gain power over this part of the Antarctic continent. The territory has been divided into districts namely: Archipel Crozet, Archipel des Kerguelen, Saint Paul, Terre Adelie and lles Eparses. All the above islands are inhabited with the population varying at the different seasons. All the above districts are governed by a chief having powers similar to the French major. The island does not have the power to send representatives to the parliament nor does it has an elected assembly as the population keeps on varying.
The territory only facilitates activities like fishing and crustaceans. Some researchers use the territory for some research purpose like geophysical and metrology researchers. Some of the major fishes that are obtained from the territory compromise of the spine lobster and the Patagonian toothfish. The fishing is only limited to the foreign fleets and any other unauthorized vessel are caught by the French navy. The tourists who want to visit the island the easiest method is to book a ticket of the Marion Dufresne i.e. a ship for research purpose also used for some tourism.
