Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua officially known as Antigua and Barbuda is a dependent island country. It comprises of two island groups, Antigay a small island in West Indies in Caribbean Sea and Barbuda a flat coral island. It is located in the middle of Leeward Islands approximately 17 degrees north of equator. It has an approximate population of sixty eight thousand people with an area of approximately one hundred and eight square miles. This island is named after a saint Santa Maria la Antigua.
The Government of Antigua is similar to British system having constitutional monarchy headed by an appointed governor general .The democratically elected Parliament has seven member house of representatives and seven member senate for formulating and approving legislative functions. Prime minister who is leader of the party holding majority seats is the executive head.
Majority of the population consists of descendents of slaves brought from Africa centuries ago for agriculture mainly sugar cultivation. After the British abolished slavery in 1834 they developed and matured. English is the official language but most people speak Creole whish has its African origin.
This Central American island is famous for its cricketing legacy with its British colonial links having great cricketers. This country hosted some of the 2007 cricket world cup matches. It is blessed with natural beauty Tourism is the major source of income and its cost lines are all well developed for that. All major US Commercial airline companies are operating from here. This enables tourists from US easy access to this island for holiday escape.
