Jamaica
The island country of Jamaica is situated in Caribbean Sea. It is located in northeast of Central America mainland, south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola island. The Taino, Arawakan speaking inhabitants named the country as Xaymaca that means Land of Wood and Water or Land of Springs. After United States and Canada, Jamaica is the third most popular Anglophone country.
Jamaica has a strong global presence, in spite of being a small nation. The various musical genres like reggae, mento, ska, rocksteady, dud and recently dancehall and raga all originated in Jamaica. The birth of hip-hop also took place in Jamaica. Christianity is the strong influential in Jamaica. Soccer, athletics, cricket, and horse racing remain the major interests of Jamaica. Infrastructure of Jamaica is good and roadways being the backbone.
Jamaica has free market economy with state enterprises as well as private sector businesses. The major economy of Jamaica includes agriculture, tourism, and financial, mining, manufacturing, and insurance services. However, mining and tourism are the major foreign exchange earners. Recent economic performances show growth in the Jamaican economy. Main industries of Jamaica are tourism, food processing, light manufacturing, textiles, bauxite, cement, rum, paper, metal, and chemical products. The major export products remain bauxite, alumina, sugar, rum and bananas. The import of Jamaica includes machinery and transport equipments, construction materials, food, fuel, fertilizers, and chemicals.
