Saint Pierre and Miquelon

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is the group of islands situated on the eastern side of Canada. The largest of the island are Saint Pierre and Miquelon. The islands belong to European Union and France. The weather is windy and damp throughout the year. During the winter season the environment becomes chilly cold. The winter season lasts for long here.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon features a multi ethnic group including French, Basques and Brittany. Most of the people in this island nation belong to the French fishing community. The blend of various ethnicities has rendered a vibrant and rich culture to this island. The primary culture is French though there is an element, which can be termed as “Basque pride” finely amalgamated into it. This can be witnessed during the annual “Basque festival” which features various competition requiring extreme skill and concentration. Though lacking a distinct musical tradition, Saint Pierre and Miquelon plays host to a number of musical festivals such as Basque Festival, Snow crab festival and Defelantes festival.

During the yesteryears the economy in the Saint Pierre and Miquelon was based on cod fishing. At present the economy is dependant equally on fishing, tourism and agriculture. The fishing industry is divided into various subcategories such as fish farming and crab fishing.
