Chemists

The word chemist has been derived from the Latin noun chimista an abbreviation of the word alchimista meaning alchemist. Many theories suggest that it were alchemists who had first discovered the chemical processes that in turn led to the discovery and growth of modern chemistry. Some theories even claim that the first chemist ever known was a woman from Babylonia who made perfumes and cosmetics from various substances. In earlier times chemistry was seen more as an art than a science and by 1000 BC, this art had expanded to the smelting of metals followed by drugs, dyes, iron and bronze making. The refinement of lead and mercury was also made around this time.

Antonie Lavoisier is recognized as an inventor of modern chemistry who in 1783 came up with his law of Conservation of mass developing chemistry into a full fledged science. People trained in the science of chemistry are called chemists who study the composition, structure, small scale properties and other chemical properties of matter. They use this knowledge to reproduce naturally occurring substances and produce new artificial substances. The processes involving improved oil refining and petrochemical processing reducing pollution and saving energy are the recent contributions made in chemical research.
