Men have known about the moon since times that can be referred to as being pre historic. The moon, which is next brightest object that appears in the sky after the sun, is also referred to as terrestrial planet in the same line as Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury.
The moon had been first landed on by Luna, the spacecraft from Soviet Union in the year 1969. It is the only extra terrestrial body which the humans have visited. Men landed on moon first in 1969 and for the last time in 1972. They have even brought back samples from the moon to earth. The moon was also mapped in 1999 by the Lunar Prospector.
Some outstanding effects that happen with the acting of gravitational forces between the moon and the Earth are the tides. The part of the earth which is nearer to the moon faces very strong and active gravitational force while the other side is weaker. Due to the uneven nature of the gravitational attraction between the earth and the moon, the rotation of the earth is slowed down while the rotation of the moon was slowed to tally with the orbital period and a stable situation occurred. The same happened in earth’s case where eventually the rotation of the earth would be slowed to match that of the Period of the moon.
The moon has no dark side to it as all parts of the moon are lit up by the sunlight almost always. It has a few craters at the poles which are a little dark. There is no atmosphere on the moon. There is water on the moon at the poles which has been confirmed by the Lunar Prospector. The Maria that builds up around sixteen per cent of the surface of the moon is huge craters filled in with lava that is melted. There is regolith, a fine mixture of rocky debris and dust. The moon has no magnetic field and no atmosphere and it is fully exposed to the solar winds.
