Statistics

The word statistics has Latin and Italian origins. It is probably the most commonly used mathematic branch that there. It is basically concerned with acquiring, organizing, filtering, summarizing and then analysing data to reach conclusions about sets of information or data. The last stage analysis leads to final interpretations which are then used for inference.

The application of statistics can be found in almost every field. Whether its graphs of linear motion being compiled in physics or whether its making summary of planet distances from earth or whether it’s a simple result compilation of a grade 2 class, statistics has application in almost every academic field where accumulation, analysis and interpretations of data are required. Statistics help us in reaching a decision which is based on solid analysis.

Statistics is extremely useful when large quantities of data are being used. Descriptive statistics is carried out to collect data of a sample. It is then summarized and filtered for abnormalities. Then inferential statistics is used to work on the data collected before. Models are derived based on the sample and then conclusions are formed regarding the whole population. Graphical summaries can then be prepared using charts and graphs.
