Archimedes known for his ideas on levers, hydrostatics and infinitesimals was an engineer, physicist and a mathematician. There are many who are unaware that he was the brain behind many discoveries such as constructing a machine that could sink a ship without lifting from water and a device to set fire to a ship from a distance. He’s most known for his principle of Archimedes dealing with fluids. Archimedes principle states that when an object in immersed in a fluid, the weight of the fluid displaced is directly proportional the buoyant force on the body. Some of his other famous discoveries are : -
He explained the principle of lever system although he did not discover it. He designed the tackle and block pulley system which was used to lift heavy objects by the sailors.
Archimedes screw, another of his masterpieces was used to lift water by operating it manually.
Odometer was designed by him.
He gave the formula for finding the area of a circle.
He developed the geometric sequential series. Archimedes met his end at the hands of a Roman soldier despite orders from the king not to harm him.
