Animal Testing

Animal Testing, otherwise known as animal research refers to the using of animals for medicinal researches. There are around fifty to one hundred million animal species who are euthanized or killed in the course of the experiments. A good number of vertebrates are used for experiments but the numbers are actually not listed in the annual statistics. The researches are carried out on the farms, the pharmaceutical firms, the medical colleges, the universities where research work is conducted and at other commercial institutions where research work goes on. Even a good number of animals are reared for the purpose of experiments, while quite a big number of them are caught.

There are many universities on research on Bio Medical subjects that go for animal testing and they believe than animal research plays a unique role in the advancement of medical sciences in the country. Many such experiments went forward to get the Nobel Prize and that includes the discovery of penicillin where the use of mice was made. Organ transplantation involved the use of dogs whole the research on poliomyelitis led to the discovery of vaccine and was experimented widely on monkeys and mice.

Of course, the topic is subject to debate and whether it is bad scientific practice to use the poor animals for experiments, whether it is unnecessary, whether they are really predictive in the case of human physiological typicality, and whether the costs really outreach the benefits or the animals have a right not to be used as “guinea pigs for experiments” are hotly debated issues, even to this day.
