Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and it is the fifth in its distance from the sun. Jupiter could easily fit in 1000 earths or more inside it, if it was hollow. Jupiter has more matter than all other planets have combined. Four out of the 28 satellites of Jupiter are Io, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto which were noticed by Gallileo in and around the year, 1610. There were 12 other satellites discovered recently. The ring system, though faint has been discovered recently.
The atmosphere on Jupiter is very intense covering the whole planet in a similar nature like the sun. It is made up of mainly helium and hydrogen with ammonia, methane, other compounds and water vapour. In greater depths inside the planet, Jupiter, there is such intense pressure that the atoms of hydrogen are split into electrons. There are Auroral lights noticed often referred to as “footprints” in the northern lights region of Jupiter which is similar to that of earth.
The Famous Great red spot on Jupiter was seen first by Voyager 1 in the year 1979. Clouds as little as 160 km can be found here and the colourful pattern of clouds near the Red Spot to the left is in a wavy motion.
