Mars

The fourth planet on the Solar System is Mars, named after the Roman God. Mars is the red planet because when seen from the earth it appears red. This is a terrestrial planet. It has different features on it like valleys, volcanoes, craters like those on the moon, deserts and ice caps. On the Mars, the highest mountain, Olympus Mons and Valles Marineries, the largest canyon, are present. The cycles of the seasons are also similar to that of earth.

It had been speculated there was liquid water on the surface in the dark and light patches, where there were long and dark lines present. These were later taken to be optical illusions. Mars is also said to harbour life as in earth. Mars also hosts three functional spacecrafts. Previously it had large water bodies. Observations reveal that there is geyser like flow of water recently. The Moons are Deimos and Phobos. These are irregular shaped and very small. There may be captured Asteroids which like 5261 Eureka which is a Martian Asteroid.

Earth has double the radius in comparison to that of the earth and it is less dense. It has a surface area that is less than the total area of the dry land of the earth. Mars is massive and large even more than Mercury and the red appearance is due to the presence of iron oxide which is more commonly called rust or hematite.
