Memorial Services

Memorial services, as the name suggests, are services held in the memory of a deceased person. They usually take place a day or two after the funeral, but the actual date is decided after taking into consideration the needs and schedule of the family of the dead person. While the body of the deceased is normally present at a funeral, a memorial service takes place without the body.

The family in question first needs to decide whether the service would be formal or informal. A formal service would take place in a formal setting-a church or a synagogue for example. A clergy member can be asked to preside over the memorial .A private residence or an ampitheatre can be considered as possible venues for an informal memorial service. Relatives and close family friends are intimidated well in advance about the date and location, and if deemed fit, announcements may be given in the newspaper or local radio station.

On the day of the service, family members who are comfortable with speaking in front of a crowd may talk for 2-5 minutes. They may speak at length about the man, his deeds, his virtues and quirks. Rare photos and other mementos may be brought to the event. Other family members are entrusted with cooking, arranging flowers, reading poems etc, welcoming the guests, lighting candles, playing music etc.

Some people choose to provide guest books for the attendees to sign. The books serve as memories of the day- a sad but significant one for the relatives of the deceased.
