Suicide

Suicide means the deliberate ending of one's own life. The stamp of the Latin language is quite evidently seen on this word.( sui-own, cidium-killing). Suicide is a practice which has no age barriers, be it someone as young as 15 or someone as old as 75.

There are a number of reasons for one wanting to commit suicide . It could be induced by stress, depression, low self esteem, physical and financial difficulties, or even the simple desire to avoid pain. Most people who commit suicide tend to be emotionally weak and prefer to avoid the problem rather than to stand on the ground and confront it head on. Suicide is often seen by them as an easy way out of the situation in which they are currently stuck . For example, a student who fails an exam and is ashamed of facing his peers may choose to end his life. The same goes for an old person who feels unwanted and useless and wants to terminate his life in frustration. In ancient times, warriors in several countries preferred to kill themselves rather than fall into the hands of the enemy.

Suicide, and euthanasia in particular, is still a heavily debated topic. Some say that allowing a person to die, even if the consent of the concerned person is obtained, is wrong. Some see no wrong in allowing a person to suffer a quick death rather than forcing him to have a painful, agony filled end. Encouraging or abetting suicide is seen as a crime in many countries. As per data available, Eastern European and Asian countries like Belarus, Lithuania and Japan tend to have high suicide rates in the world today.
