Police powers are given to uphold the law and also to ensure that police officers do their job correctly and are not unfair or inconsistent when doing their job. The rights of individuals are inteded to be protected by these police powers.
The powers given to the police are governed by several parliament acts, such as the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, and the Criminal Justice Act 2003. These acts contain details on what police officers can and cannot do, and also give instructions on how certain tasks must be carried out, such as searching and arresting individuals.
